By default, Birdhouse accounts do not come with ssh/shell access. However, we’re happy to grant ssh access to certain customers after developing a trust relationship with Birdhouse. Users wanting shell access should contact us. Once shell access has been granted, use:

ssh -l username birdhouse.org
or
ssh username@domain.com

Telnet is not supported. Warning: Anything you run that consumes excessive CPU cycles or that attempts to sniff, hax0r, or otherwise compromise accounts or private property in any way will be grounds for immediate account termination. Please read our Terms of Service before trying any funny business.

If you’d like to use a shell other than bash, you can launch zsh, csh, ksh, or tcsh manually after logging in, or add the full path to a shell to your bash login script. If you prefer, contact Birdhouse support and we’ll change the default login shell for you.

If you’re stuck on a Windows machine and thus don’t have easy access to a secure shell, we highly recommend the freeware application Putty.
